Habitat 64 - Winter 2021

2 In equal parts, I am thrilled and humbled to be writing to you as the new Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS). My lifelong commitment to the diversity of animals and people who share the natural world has shaped my career as a veterinarian, conservationist and zoo professional. I have observed and admired the DZS’s leadership and extraordinary track record in wildlife conservation, animal welfare, humane education and environmental sustainability and these commitments are precisely what attracted me to this role. Already, I can see how the DZS staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, members, donors and community have worked together, and with great dedication, to advance each pillar of the DZS mission. As I pick up the mantle of leadership, I hope that each of you will DR. HAYLEY W. MURPHY continue your support on the next leg of the DZS’s journey. In this issue of Habitat , we are pleased to share an important wildlife conservation story that has been years in the making. It not only highlights the journey of five individual vultures, but it also provides a window into the critical role they play in a healthy African ecosystem. In turn, this offers a glimpse into the complexities – and the importance – of maintaining and restoring the vitality of the world we share. We cannot shy away from these challenges, even as we also take time to celebrate the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center for all that they mean to our community. There’s no better place to experience the wonders of nature, to recall good times with friends and loved ones, or to create new memories. From all of us at the Detroit Zoological Society, we thank you for Celebrating and Saving Wildlife and Wild Places and we wish you a happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year. Hayley W. Murphy, DVM Executive Director/CEO
