We are happy to jump in with both feet.” No doubt their penguin friends will do the same when they move to the Polk Penguin Conservation Center in the coming weeks. The Detroit Zoological Society’s Members, donors and staff have lately been swept up in a wave of penguin affection. But for Sarah and Tony Earley, the planning and building of the Polk Penguin Conservation Center is a high point – rather than the beginning – of a special fondness for these charming birds. The Earleys moved to Michigan in 1994, when Tony was appointed chairman of DTE Energy Company. Accompanying him into his large executive office were dozens of plush, ceramic and glass penguins. Each year during the holidays, their family gathers around a Christmas tree decorated entirely with penguin ornaments. The Earleys are now living in California but their ties to Michigan are as strong as ever. Among many community activities, Sarah is chair of the Belle Isle Conservancy and is deeply devoted to the island’s revitalization. A former member of the DZS Board, Tony is now an active member of the Chair’s Advisory Council for the Zoo. When invited to contribute to the new penguin facility, the Earleys responded with generosity and enthusiasm. Their names will be associated with a display about explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew, who survived a harrowing expedition to Antarctica a century ago.
