Habitat 36 Spring 2014

detroitzoo.org • HABITAT | 15 dzoo.org/support  suppor t Remembering Ed Parks The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) lost a dear, unique and loyal friend with the passing of Edgar (“Ed”) Parks in November. An accomplished and visionary civil engineer, Ed lent his extraordinary talent to help in the development of dozens of exhibits at the Detroit Zoo, including the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat, National Amphibian Conservation Center and Arctic Ring of Life. Whatever the project, large or small, Ed improved it with his creativity and technical genius. In fact, the “viewing bubbles” in the popular prairie dog habitat began as a design sketched at his dining room table. Ed also played a leading role in designing the Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex, which opened in 2005 and serves the diverse needs of our animal residents and veterinary staff extremely well. Ed also served on the Society’s Board and Executive Committee for many years. A graduate of University of Cincinnati, Ed spent 41 years with Albert Kahn Associates, Architects and Engineers, in Detroit – completing his last eight years as the firm’s President and CEO. In addition to helping the Zoo, Ed was actively involved in local churches and the communities in which he lived. He was passionate about protecting the environment and especially committed to preserving habitats for eagles. DZS Executive Director/CEO Ron Kagan says, “Ed was brilliant, generous, wise and warm. He was a compassionate person and leader. We were truly blessed to have his counsel over the years, including his help with designing the future Polk Penguin Conservation Center.” Ed is survived by Ruth Parks, his wife of 63 years, as well as their son and daughter and their spouses, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. When the lifelong sweethearts marked their 50th wedding anniversary, they had a moving party at the Zoo’s Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, and for their 60th anniversary (in 2010), they celebrated by strolling among the beautiful exhibits Ed helped to create and visiting the animals he loved.
