As a nonprofit responsible for the care and welfare of more than 3,300 animals, we rely on charitable gifts to support our mission of Celebrating and Saving Wildlife . A one-time, monthly or quarterly donation of any amount to the Detroit Zoo Fund will help with this effort. After all, we have a lot of mouths to feed! Something more to chew on: Charitable donations bridge the gap between revenue from admissions, membership and millage funds and the true costs of Zoo operations. Proceeds from the sale of her home were placed in the DZS endowment fund from which earnings provide income beyond a lifetime. She also designated DZS as one of the beneficiaries of her estate. When a check arrived from the Loretta R. Lyk Trust, along with a hand-written note Loretta had penned when she made her will, staff were again moved by her passion for the Zoo and desire to share what she had. This donation will be used to help construct The Polk Family Penguin Conservation Center, fulfilling Loretta’s wishes that it be used “for the building of an animal exhibit.” An appropriate space in the facility, scheduled to open in late 2015, will honor Loretta’s parents, Joseph and Helen Lyk, as she requested.
